The fish is now a pending world record, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheIGFA\/posts\/pfbid0RHJKdjMNhhiqyh3ta96vXXephy27bBBMQHh6nn1Vog8rUN1AjhpSi5TRi2mUJgK8l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the International Game Fish Association<\/a>, which is currently reviewing the catch.<\/p>\n<p>If accepted by the IGFA, Schmid\u2019s 44 1\/2-inch King salmon would become the new <a href=\"https:\/\/igfa.org\/member-services\/world-record\/common-name\/Salmon,%20Chinook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">world-record chinook<\/a> in the \u201cAll-Tackle Length\u201d category. A relatively new class of record fish, <a href=\"https:\/\/igfa.org\/2022\/03\/02\/the-igfa-expands-world-record-categories\/#:~:text=The%20IGFA%20All%2DTackle%20Length,safely%20handled%20and%20released%20alive.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the category was established<\/a> by the organization in 2011 to incentivize catch and release.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FTheIGFA%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0RHJKdjMNhhiqyh3ta96vXXephy27bBBMQHh6nn1Vog8rUN1AjhpSi5TRi2mUJgK8l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"518\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In other words, Schmid\u2019s chinook is not even close to the heaviest King salmon ever caught\u2014something that many social media users have already pointed out. It likely weighed less than half as much as the true <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskasportshall.org\/inductee\/les-andersons-king-salmon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">All-Tackle world-record chinook<\/a>, which was just over 97 pounds. Angler Les Anderson caught that fish from Alaska\u2019s Kenai River in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>Schmid already holds the current All-Tackle Length world record for chinook salmon. He caught that 41-plus-inch fish from the same river in Argentina on Jan. 21. And looking at the IGFA record book, the angler has been on a record-setting mission over the past 12 years. Between November 2011 and today, Schmid has logged <a href=\"https:\/\/igfa.org\/member-services\/world-record\/angler\/James%20Schmid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a total of 25 IGFA records<\/a>. Those record fish have come from Texas, Wisconsin, Nevada, Canada, Bolivia, Brazil, and Argentina. Other details behind Schmid\u2019s pending record catch are slim, but the IGFA specified that Schmid hooked the salmon on a Dixie Jet Spoon. He was using a spinning rod paired with a Shimano Stradic 5000 reel. <\/p>\n<p>Chinook salmon are only native to the North Pacific. They were introduced to South America in the 1970s, and there is now a robust population of naturally reproducing wild salmon there.
