The short clip was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nativedude1\/video\/7227976243197513003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shared to TikTok<\/a> (and then re-shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100002614374827\/videos\/209190145203845\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on Facebook<\/a>) earlier this week, where it\u2019s generated some speculation from a few social media users. According to the video\u2019s description, it was recorded on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shoalwaterbay-nsn.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shoalwater Bay Reservation<\/a> near Tokeland in the southwest corner of the state. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fty.allman%2Fvideos%2F209190145203845%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At first glance, the animal looks a bit like an overgrown sheepdog or a domestic pig that spent way too long at the trough. Upon closer examination, it clearly has the body shape and gait of a bear\u2014but with the coloration of a Holstein cow. Perhaps, as one person pointed out, it\u2019s an escaped exotic looking for a patch of bamboo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a big ol\u2019 panda,\u201d they wrote in a Facebook comment. <\/p>\n<p>Speculation and jokes aside, the bear in the video is clearly a piebald black bear. This genetic condition also <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/condition\/piebaldism\/#:~:text=Piebaldism%20is%20a%20condition%20characterized,that%20are%20lighter%20than%20normal.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affects humans<\/a>, and it has been documented in plenty of other animals, including snakes, foxes, and all cervid species. Piebaldism is more common than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorlife.com\/hunting\/youth-tags-white-gobbler-missouri\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leucism<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorlife.com\/conservation\/melanistic-mule-deer-texas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">melanism<\/a>, which are also genetic conditions that cause an animal\u2019s skin or fur to be almost entirely white or all black, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Piebald animals, on the other hand, typically just have unpigmented patches. This causes an otherwise normal black bear to look like a giant panda. Roughly one in every 1,000 whitetails is piebald, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncwildlife.org\/Hunting\/After-the-Hunt\/Deer-Diseases\/Commonality-of-Albino-Deer#:~:text=Piebald%20deer%20are%20much%20more,in%20one%20in%2030%2C000%20deer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission<\/a>. (There are, of course, significantly more whitetail deer than black bears in North America, so it\u2019s not surprising that piebald deer are more common than piebald bears.) <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unknown what percentage of <a href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/species-habitats\/species\/ursus-americanus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington\u2019s roughly 20,000 black bears<\/a> inherit the genetic condition, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
