Shotgun ammo can be a bit different. Rounds like Federal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/ammo-review-federal-premium-law-enforcement-buckshot-with-flitecontrol-wad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Personal Defense with Flitecontrol<\/a> are worth a look and comparison to competitors. What makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesbullets.com\/product\/barnes-defense-buckshot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barnes Defense Buckshot<\/a> eye-catching is its cost of almost $4.00 per round.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barnes describes the new load as being \u201cproduced with the uncompromising precision and reliability\u201d and having a price of between $17.99 and $21.99 for a five-round box. Most of the big box stores carry it and price it in that range. I\u2019ve found it for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;merchant_id=83c7c186-fb5f-42ca-a1a4-8e6e1a99ac2e&amp;website_id=4e8a62e5-c9f2-4169-947d-06856fc118da&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sportsmans.com%2Fshooting-gear-gun-supplies%2Fammunition-ammo-for-hunting-shooting-sports%2Fshotgun-ammo-hunting-shooting-sports%2Fbarnes-bullets-defense-12ga-3in-15-pellets-00-buckshot-shotshells-5-rounds%2Fp%2F1814896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$3.60 a round<\/a>, but you have to do some looking. It\u2019s safe to say that Barnes Defense is not inexpensive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the options for buckshot out there, the price alone made me curious. What exactly does an almost $4.00 shotgun shell do? I don\u2019t mind paying a premium for good defensive ammunition. The sale price put it in within my price\/curiosity threshold, and if I can get some half-off high-quality buckshot, I figured I owed it to myself to give it a try. I wanted to see what $4-a-round buckshot does in the real world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Breaking Down the Cartridges\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each box holds five 2.75-inch shells. They\u2019re rated at 1,325 feet per second and each round contains nine pellets of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/shotgun-mini-shells-a-shotgunner-on-their-advantages-disadvantages-and-best-uses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OO buck.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Barnes Defense are high brass rounds which will please owners of picky shotguns. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2.75-inch shell isn\u2019t 2.75 inches until it\u2019s fired and uncrimped. (Travis Pike for TTAG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some shells are longer than others, to the point where a 2.75-inch shell may be quite long and can even reduce a shotgun\u2019s capacity by a round. That\u2019s not a problem here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Barnes Defense rounds fit perfectly in the tube, and a seven-round tube will hold seven rounds of Barnes Defense. Nine-pellet buckshot rounds often exhibit what\u2019s called a 9th pellet flyer. That means a single pellet frequently flies a fair bit away from the main group. That\u2019s something to be aware of when each pellet is a .33 caliber projectile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>To The Range\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I loaded the Barnes Defense Buckshot a round at a time and patterned them at 10 and 15 yards. Ten yards is within home defense range. Fifteen yards is on the far end, but still well still worth patterning. At fifteen yards, the pattern opened up to 9.5 inches. Again, not particularly impressive. It\u2019s nothing special, but at ten yards, the Federal load patterns at 3.5 inches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for those 9th pellet flyers, they occurred more often than not at fifteen yards with the Barnes Defense load.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Barnes Defense loads pattern more like what I\u2019ve seen from cheap foreign-made loads, like Rio or S&amp;B. It simply doesn\u2019t pattern particularly well\u2026or even above average. What about other factors?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The R&amp;R Of Shotgun Rounds\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R&amp;R for shotgun rounds means recoil and reliability. In terms of reliability, there wasn\u2019t a single issue. Every round fired, ejected, and cycled without a problem. Recoil wasn\u2019t rough or shoulder-pounding. It was fairly average and was easy to shoot rapidly without much muzzle rise. The Barnes Defense <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-review-mossberg-590-retrograde-shotgun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shotgun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rounds performed as you\u2019d expect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall the Barnes rounds fed fine and shot fine. But they were decidedly underwhelming for a round that costs four bucks a pop. The shuck-shuck noise of a punp shotgun is replaced with the ka-ching ka-ching of sending four dollars downrange with every squeeze of the trigger. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this was your average 70 cents-per-round buckshot round I can get in my local big box store any day of the week, it\u2019d be no big deal.
