{"id":1369,"date":"2023-07-13T13:27:16","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T13:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americangunpeople.com\/?p=1369"},"modified":"2023-07-13T13:27:16","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T13:27:16","slug":"red-flag-laws-will-not-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americangunpeople.com\/?p=1369","title":{"rendered":"\u201cRed Flag\u201d Laws Will Not Save Lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed Flag\u201d Gun Confiscation Orders (GCOs), also known as Extreme Risk Protection Orders, are an objectively ineffective proposal in the wake of mass public shootings. A study on the effectiveness of \u201cRed Flag\u201d GCOs, conducted in 2018 using data from 13 states for a combined total of 36 years, found that <strong>\u201cRed Flag\u201d Gun Confiscation Orders don\u2019t reduce crime, don&#8217;t reduce suicides, don&#8217;t reduce murders, and don&#8217;t reduce mass murders<\/strong>. <a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, most mass shooters fall into one of two categories: (1) no \u201cred flags\u201d that something was wrong or (2) a governmental authority failed to act in any way, whether it be using ineffective \u201cRed Flag\u201d GCOs, the process of involuntary commitment for the mentally ill, or making a prosecutable arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the <em>failures<\/em> of \u201cRed Flag\u201d GCOs can be seen in recent high-profile shootings such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Buffalo, New York<\/strong> (2022), New York has the strongest \u201cred flag\u201d laws in the nation, allowing doctors to violate patient confidentiality to have guns seized. Police referred the future mass murderer for psychiatric evaluation. The law failed, he was not disarmed, and he went on to murder 10 in a grocery store a year later.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[2]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Boulder, Colorado<\/strong> (2021), the future murderer displayed violent impulses, including repeatedly punching a classmate in the head. An acquaintance described how the future shooter \u201cwould talk about him being Muslim and how if anybody tried anything, he would file a hate crime and say they were making it up.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[3]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Indianapolis, Indiana <\/strong>(2021), police confiscated the future murderer\u2019s shotgun without a warrant and failed to fill out \u201cred flag\u201d gun confiscation paperwork, allowing him to legally purchase new firearms at a later date.<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[4]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jacksonville, Florida<\/strong> (2019), when \u201cRed Flag\u201d GCOs in both Florida and Maryland failed to disarm a future murderer whose mother called the police on him \u201cabout 20 times,\u201d who was involuntary committed six times, and was on \u201cantipsychotic medications.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\">[5]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Parkland, Florida<\/strong> (2018), where a GCO would have been ineffective because the family defended the murderer\u2019s emotional state to authorities during the dozens of times he was investigated prior to the attack. Each time he was reported as \u201clow risk\u201d despite police ability to arrest him on several counts.<a href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\">[6]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aurora, Illinois<\/strong> (2019), where state-level Universal Background Checks, Firearm Owner ID cards, \u201cRed Flag\u201d GCOs, and the NICS system failed to stop a \u201cdepressed\u201d man with an aggravated assault conviction from purchasing and possessing firearms and later murdering his coworkers.<a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\">[7]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>San Bernardino, California<\/strong> (2015), when, despite a 2014 GCO law, authorities ignored \u201cred flags\u201d like inclinations to jihad, martyrdom, and contact with terrorist recruiters.<a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\">[8]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Thousand Oaks, California<\/strong> (2018), when, despite a mental health task force check-up and police considering a \u201cRed Flag\u201d GCO, authorities and gun control failed to stop the attack.<a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">[9]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some recent high-profile <em>shootings where there were<\/em> <em>no \u201cred flags\u201d <\/em>in the life of the shooter are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sebring, Florida<\/strong> (2019), where several government-job related background checks and a $400 million gun control package from 2018, including GCOs, found no \u201cred flags\u201d to report to police.<a href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\">[10]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>El Paso, Texas<\/strong> (2019), where Governor Abbot said \u201cthere were no red flags\u201d about the shooter who waited until moments before the attack to publicly open up about his racism and hateful beliefs. <a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\">[11]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Santa Fe, Texas<\/strong> (2018), where not only has Governor Abbott stated there were no \u201cred flags\u201d in the life of the school shooter, but the killer stole his weapons\u2014meaning he would have evaded any gun control background check or \u201cRed Flag\u201d law designed to disarm him.<a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\">[12]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Gilroy, California<\/strong> (2019), where despite a 2014 state-level \u201cRed Flag\u201d law, the murderer \u201cshowed no reasons for concern,\u201d when purchasing a firearm.
