RemArms, the reimagined brand offshoot of the Remington every hunter and shooter has known for two centuries, announced the change in a letter to union leaders Thursday, reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uticaod.com\/story\/news\/2023\/12\/01\/remington-arms-successor-remarms-closing-ilion-plant\/71767398007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>Utica Observer-Dispatch<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am writing to inform you that RemArms, LLC has decided to close its entire operations at 14 Hoefler Avenue, Ilion, NY 13357,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cThe Company expects that operations at the Ilion Facility will conclude on or about March 4, 2024. The Company did not arrive at this decision lightly.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\" data-dimension=\"landscape\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">OL visited the Ilion plant in 2019. The Remington Outdoor Company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timestelegram.com\/story\/news\/2021\/05\/10\/remarms-brings-back-230-remington-employees-ilion-plant-owner-says\/5020091001\/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filed for bankruptcy in July 2020<\/a>, laying off 585 employees without severance benefits and halting operations in Ilion. In fall 2020, an investment firm named The Roundhill Group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorlife.com\/guns\/remington-ammunition-comeback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">purchased the manufacturing plant<\/a>, along with a second Remington facility in Tennessee that made handgun barrels, and renamed the company RemArms. (Meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorlife.com\/guns\/marlin-rifles-the-comeback-continues\/\">Ruger bought Marlin<\/a>, which had been <a href=\"https:\/\/sgbonline.com\/remington-acquires-marlin-firearms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">under Remington ownership<\/a> since late 2007. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorlife.com\/guns\/remington-ammunition-comeback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Remington Ammunition is now a separate company<\/a> from RemArms firearms.)<\/p>\n<p>In May 2021, 230 RemArms employees returned to the Ilion plant to continue operations. The company was focused on mass-producing Model 870s shotguns and Model 700 rifles, and restocking shelves before hunting season rolled around, director of product management Adam Ballard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldandstream.com\/gear\/remington-reveals-plans-for-new-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">told <em>Field and Stream<\/em><\/a> at the time. (<em>Outdoor Life <\/em>has since tested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorlife.com\/guns\/remington-870-fieldmaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the RemArms 870 Fieldmaster<\/a>, which has replaced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorlife.com\/guns\/remarms-870-express-shotgun-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the RemArms 870 Express<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Around 300 employees clocked in at the Ilion plant every day, making it the largest employer in rural Herkimer County, New York. Many of those employees are represented by the United Mine Workers of America. The UMWA negotiated on behalf of the employees during the 2020 bankruptcy, resulting layoffs, and acquisition. UMWA international president Cecil E. Roberts <a href=\"https:\/\/umwa.org\/news-media\/press\/umwa-responds-to-closing-of-remarms-llc-ilion-plant\/?fbclid=IwAR0qUcQ6fCRjYWKpB7oaSU4DuOMI1cYepo5uN_9-MIdxT7TxNl7eDqV-MBw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released a statement<\/a> in response to the news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is extremely disappointing to hear that RemArms LLC is closing its Ilion plant,\u201d he wrote on Thursday. \u201cThe workers in Ilion enabled RemArms to rise from the ashes of the Remington Arms bankruptcy in 2020-21. Without these workers and their dedication to producing the best firearms in the world, this company simply would not exist \u2026 This announcement by the company is a slap in the face to all of them. The timing adds insult to injury for those affected. Merry Christmas from RemArms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A RemArms representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Snow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorlife.com\/articles\/guns\/2016\/06\/interview-remington-ceo-james-marcotuli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in 2016<\/a>, during the gunmaker\u2019s 200th anniversary. \u201cThere\u2019s a ton of experience and knowledge there. We\u2019ve been producing Remington products in Ilion since 1816.
