At first glance the A.T.A.C 2.0 (just ATAC2 from now on) looks like a pretty ordinary tactical boot.\u00a0 A deeper inspection really shows how much thought and engineering went into the design of this boot.\u00a0 Comfort and durability apparently snuck away for a romantic tryst, and the ATAC2 is the result.<\/p>\n
The sole has excellent grip, and is firm, yet yielding.\u00a0 There\u2019s great foot support here, but I\u2019m not walking on a plank.<\/p>\n
The insole is similar.\u00a0 It\u2019s soft and gives some \u201csquish\u201d for foot comfort, but is firm enough you don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re walking on marshmallows.\u00a0 I was surprised to see it\u2019s just foam.\u00a0 This whole boot feels like a velvet lined pickup truck.<\/p>\n
I love YKK zippers.\u00a0 I\u2019m struggling to understand how other zipper manufacturers are still hanging around.\u00a0 When a boot, tent, or sleeping bag has YKK zippers, it shows a commitment to quality in one of the first areas manufacturers like to cut costs<\/p>\n
But a boot\u2019s a boot right?\u00a0 Well, 5.11 always does their best to make sure their gear stands out, and the ATAC2 is no different.\u00a0 Little touches like the knife pocket on the side of each boot (really a multipurpose pocket), the heavily reinforced pull straps, and the\u00a0velcro<\/del> hook-pile-loop zipper guard really add to the whole package.<\/p>\nTime Spent<\/h4>\n Features look great on paper.\u00a0 But one wrong stitch in a boot means you\u2019ll have a hot spot in a mile, or a blown sole in 50.\u00a0 Time spent using and abusing a product means more than all the features in the world.<\/p>\n
I was lucky enough to get the 5.11 ATAC2 early enough in Spring that some cold weather was still here on my little mountaintop homestead.\u00a0 Soon, the wet weather moved in, and now we\u2019re well into some mighty hot days.\u00a0 So far, the ATAC2 has handled the change in temperature just fine.<\/p>\n
These aren\u2019t dedicated winter boots, nor are they minimalist desert boots.\u00a0 The ATAC2\u2019s are a jack-of-all trades design, and I like them for it.\u00a0 Hike around the hillside during the days, carrying feed, building materials, and tools.\u00a0 If they were too hot, they\u2019d be gone.\u00a0 Likewise if they couldn\u2019t keep the rain and mud out, they\u2019d be gone.\u00a0 Keeping warm with temps in the 20\u2019s and 30\u2019s isn\u2019t a problem, just loosen the laces a bit and add wool socks.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been a long time since I was paid to kick in doors.\u00a0 Since then, Uncle Sam bought be a new, titanium hip, so kicking things isn\u2019t as fun as it used to be.\u00a0 I\u2019m taking apart an old stable, which includes busting down the old plywood walls.\u00a0 I\u2019ve kicked in a fair number of them with the ATAC2\u2019s on my feet, which seemed a good way to test the \u201cShock Mitigation System\u00ae\u201d.\u00a0 A hard sole sends the jolting impact straight to my hip, but the ATAC2 definitely managed to tame the amount of stress tossed onto my metal bones.<\/p>\n
When you\u2019re hiking, your feet are the last thing you want to be worrying about.\u00a0 Once they start burning, blistering, or aching, crap rolls downhill pretty fast.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty impressed with the \u201cride quality\u201d of the ATAC2, it\u2019s like driving on a new pair of quality tires.\u00a0 The truck (me) might be old and run-down, but those tires are gonna perform for a long time.<\/p>\n
\u00a0The wrap-up<\/h4>\n I review a LOT of gear.\u00a0 I don\u2019t just use it for a bit, I incorporate each item into my life for a while.\u00a0 When I have a knife in, it\u2019s the only one I use for months.\u00a0 A rifle?\u00a0 That\u2019s the one I have to take on my long-planned hunting trip, like it or not.\u00a0 Why do I mention this?\u00a0 Well, I have more boots to start working with once I\u2019m done with the ATAC2, and that pisses me off a bit.\u00a0 These aren\u2019t just boots I like, they\u2019re my\u00a0go-to<\/em> pair now.\u00a0 They\u2019ve passed my issued OD Green Jungle boots, and my issued Danner Acadia\u2019s.\u00a0 They\u2019ve passed my Danner Scorch\u2019s and my Merrill hiking shoes.\u00a0 All the miles I\u2019ve put on them, and they still look new aside from some grass and mud.\u00a0 These are the most supportive and comfortable footwear I own, bar none.\u00a0 Now I have to put them in the closet for a while to wear something else, but I\u2019ll tell you this:\u00a0 I don\u2019t envy the boots that have to follow the 5.11 A.T.A.C 2.0.<\/p>\n5.11\u2019s A.T.A.C 2.0 runs $120<\/a>, and is available in sizes from 5-15, with regular and E-width options.\u00a0 Check em out!<\/p>\nJens \u201cRex Nanorum\u201d Hammer<\/a><\/p>\n@Rexnanorum<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
