It\u2019s what ensures your tube-fed shotgun feeds reliably. I\u2019m sure there\u2019s a word for it, but it\u2019s crazy that such a small, affordable part of your weapon can be so dang important to a firearm\u2019s overall reliability.<\/p>\n<p>A good follower goes a long way to keeping your shotgun shooting reliably, and with that in mind, I typically stick with aluminum followers. I saw that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aridusindustries.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aridus Industries<\/a> recently announced their own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aridusindustries.com\/products\/smrt-aridus-follower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SMRT followers<\/a> and as soon as I saw it was live, I knew I had to have one.<\/p>\n<p>Aridus Industries is a shotgun nerd\u2019s company. They make innovative parts and pieces for a range of shotguns. They are mainly known for modifying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beretta.com\/en-us\/1301-shotguns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beretta 1301<\/a>, but they\u2019ve made a number of different accessories.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to describe their products is innovative, but the second term that comes to mind is over-engineered. They make their gear to last, and their stuff is tougher than I likely need it to be. It\u2019s a small American company that lives up to the reputation of made-in-America quality.<\/p>\n<p>Also, thumbs up to their customer service people. I ordered the SMRT follower at 8:51 AM, and I received an email at 10:51 AM saying it had shipped. I ordered it Monday, and it was in my gun on Wednesday. The SMRT follower is essentially universal for 12 gauge shotguns, and I tossed it in my Benelli SuperNova.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why bother upgrading your follower?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/contest-entry-not-for-sale-winchester-model-1897-shotgun\/\">ammo<\/a> is better than less ammo, right? Shotguns are lower-capacity weapons by their very nature so employing a magazine extension is fairly common. My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-review-benelli-super-nova\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SuperNova<\/a> wears a +2 extension. These extensions can create reliability issues without a proper follower. I love my Benelli SuperNova, but the standard cheap plastic follower doesn\u2019t inspire confidence, especially when I\u2019m aware of follower and magazine extension issues. My old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-review-remington-870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Remington 870<\/a> had a frequent issue with its +2 extension, which made me remove the extension and ditch it entirely<\/p>\n<h3><strong>In Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Installing the SMRT follower isn\u2019t difficult. Remove the magazine cap or extension, remove the spring, remove the standard follower and drop in the new one. Put it back together the same way and you\u2019re done. With just a glance, you can tell if the tube is empty.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you don\u2019t even have the light to see even a high-visibility green follower, but no worries, that\u2019s not a big problem. The front of the follower is also textured with a sharp stippling that\u2019s tactile. Reach into your loading port and you can feel the texture of the follower. It\u2019s unlike any standard follower or the end of any shotgun shell. It\u2019s unmistakable and easy to determine.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Going Live<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I loaded up my Benelli SuperNova with seven training rounds of 2.75-inch shells and then topped it off with one mini round. This would push the SMRT follower well into the magazine extension and see if it would bind. It\u2019s beyond normal use, but hey, why not.<\/p>\n<p>I ran the pump over and over and ejected and reloaded a few times to test the gun dry. It never failed to feed, and the follower never bound. It cycled smoothly, and besides a mini shell occasionally flipping in the receiver, I had no issues. Certainly no follower issues.<\/p>\n<p>The SMRT follower is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aridusindustries.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now<\/a> and is $40. It\u2019s admittedly pricey for such a small piece of gear\u2026one that\u2019s not even an afterthought for most people. However, it\u2019s an American-made product made with American-made machines. It helps you meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/922r-compliance-and-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">922R requirements<\/a> if that\u2019s a concern. It\u2019s probably not for everyone, but it\u2019s worth the price as far as I\u2019m concerned.
