Anchorage resident James West explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid035PoEtUnCk2U7XvwP1cTtKP1VH6GiZWwCcZKsNFnPPFbY382dXvaxYmLBs7mxhXW3l&amp;id=100041121002022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Facebook post<\/a> that he was driving past some dumpsters when he noticed the moose acting strangely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was stumbling, chewing profusely, and foaming at the mouth,\u201d West wrote. \u201cAs I got closer, I noticed he was choking on the trash bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3Dpfbid035PoEtUnCk2U7XvwP1cTtKP1VH6GiZWwCcZKsNFnPPFbY382dXvaxYmLBs7mxhXW3l%26id%3D100041121002022&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"838\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>West said he first thought about calling animal control, which would have been the safest option for both him and the moose. But he was worried the moose might choke to death before help arrived. Only the very top of the trash bag was visible at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kind of felt like time was of the essence,\u201d West said, \u201cso I slowly made my way closer and closer to see if I could just get ahold of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This took a fair bit of courage, but the moose didn\u2019t run away or react aggressively, and it allowed West to grab onto the plastic bag. West then slowly pulled bag out of the moose\u2019s throat without hurting himself or the animal.<\/p>\n<p>The moose was relieved, to say the least, and West spent the next hour or so hanging out with the yearling bull in the parking lot. He found a pumpkin (presumably in the dumpster) and fed it to the moose, and \u201cboy was he happy after that,\u201d West wrote. With its tongue hanging out of its mouth like a panting dog, the moose even tolerated a pat on the nose.<\/p>\n<p>The comments on West\u2019s social media post have been overwhelmingly positive, with most people calling him a hero. One person did point out, however, that what he did was extremely dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAww poor creature!\u201d wrote one user. \u201cI\u2019m glad you could help him, but you could have been hurt. This can often lead to injuries, and wildlife professionals are much better equipped than members of the public when it comes to helping animals in distress.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also illegal to feed wildlife in Alaska, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adfg.alaska.gov\/index.cfm?adfg=wildlifenews.view_article&amp;articles_id=982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to ADFG<\/a>, which points out that \u201chungry animals that associate people with food can become dangerous.\u201d This is especially true of bears and moose, the agency says.
